Interior Design

  • This service is for renovations and new build projects. We prefer whole home projects, but are open to single room projects such as kitchens and bathrooms.

    We offer Full Service, meaning we manage your project from beginning to end. We steer the design process, we schedule all the meetings, we work with you to set the design phase timeline, and we coordinate ordering and delivering furnishings. We design everything including the interior architecture, custom millwork, custom furniture, complete furnishings package, art, and accessories. We work with the builder to ensure the design plans are executed as intended. When the construction is complete, we handle the installation of all furnishings and decor. At the end of this process, your home is turned over to you to enjoy.

  • We first want to get a sense of your stylistic likes and functional needs. Getting to know you is essential to our process. Your home is a reflection of you and our goal is to design it to be so.

    We then begin our Design Phase. A typical building or renovation project is broken down into two major phases: the Design Phase and the Construction & Implementation Phase. Once we have a formal agreement on project scope, timeline, and fees, we begin to design. We establish project inspiration boards with you, from which our team works independently on the design. We schedule project milestone presentations where we reveal the design to you. We always welcome client feedback and build in revisions as part of the design process.

    Once the design is approved, we set into motion the Construction & Implementation Phase. The construction portion will be managed by the builder, with whom we work closely to ensure they execute the design plans as we intend. The furnishings portion is managed entirely by us. Working in tandem with the construction schedule set by the builders, we sequence the interiors finishes and furnishings purchasing and installation.

    The last step is to reveal your new home to you for you to enjoy.

Furnishings & Decor

  • This service is for those looking to design their space through furnishings and decor only, no renovations. Furnishings can include upholstery, case goods, lighting, and accessories.

    We offer Full Service, meaning we manage your Furnishings and Decor project from beginning to end. We steer the design process, we schedule all the meetings, we work with you to set the project timeline, and we coordinate all of the ordering, receiving, and deliveries.

    This is different than our Virtual Consultations service, where you as the client steer the project and are responsible for all purchasing and deliveries.

    This is also different from Full Service Interior Design since it excludes any invasive renovation work, and generally the project timelines can be much faster.

Virtual Consultations

  • Virtual Consultations are for anyone just needing some guidance on their project.

    If you are working on your own home and feel a bit stuck at a certain problem, Virtual Consultations are perfect for you.

    If you are in the planning stages of your own project, Virtual Consultations are a great way to get a set of experienced eyes on your plans before going too far.

    If you have a pinterest full of images that you love but aren’t sure of how to pull it together in your space, our Virtual Consultations can be a good way to brainstorm realistic possibilities and point you in the right direction.

  • You can book hourly virtual consultations to get advice on your design project. Please contact us via this Contact Page to schedule the video conference call. If you’d like, you can send us additional information and context prior to the call. It is helpful to also include your list of questions and topics for discussion so that we can be as prepared as possible.

  • $400/1 hr meeting

    This price includes the additional time I take before our one-hour call to review and prepare any answers that would be discussed during our meeting. To make the most out of the fee, please send us your list of questions, inspiration imagery, photos, and floor plans 3-4 business days prior to our scheduled call.

  • If specific products were discussed, we will send you purchasing links. If those products are from trade-only vendors that you cannot buy from directly, we will send you a payment link and facilitate that purchase for you.

General

  • An interior designer’s expertise focuses on creating space that aesthetically and functionally serves the day-to-day experience of living in your home. The architect focuses on the structure, systems, and exterior shell of the house. While there can be some overlap in roles, Vivian Shao Chen is well versed in all aspects of home design and can advise if you need an architect in addition to our interior design services. We take on interior architectural scope such as space planning, custom built-in millwork, trim packages, and full kitchen and bathroom renovations.

    A builder or contractor is responsible for construction, following the design plans created by the designer and architect.

  • We believe it’s best to hire an interior designer as early as possible during the project. We can be instrumental in the early stages of understanding feasibility, schematic space planning, and stylistic direction. We can often foresee potential issues and course-correct with the appropriate problem solving and communication.

  • Each project has its own unique scope of work and requirements. After we have our initial conversations, we work with you to establish the project scope of work upon which our design fees are based.

  • We will work with you to set a realistic budget based on the project goals. Please keep in mind that construction and/or furnishing budgets are separate from our design fees.
