The Basic Wool Hat is a knit hat, featuring a tall cuff in a contrasting rib texture and optional color blocking.

This pattern is designed to be knit bottom up (cuff first). You may choose to knit this piece either flat or in the round. Instructions are included for both methods.

This is a beginner friendly pattern, designed to be an introductory knitting project. It requires only one skein of the recommended yarn, Peace Fleece “Worsted”. If colorblocking, one skein of each color is required.

Size: Cuff inside circumference measurement: 18” (45.7 cm).

Gauge: 18 stitches x 26 rows = 4 in x 4 in (10cm x 10cm) in stockinette stitch

Needles: Needle sizes are suggested. Please knit a swatch and adjust your needle size to obtain gauge.

If knitting flat: US 4 (3.5mm) and US 6 (4mm) straight needles, 13” long.
If knitting in the round: US 4 (3.5mm) and US 6 (4mm) circular needles

If using Magic Loop method, 32” long cable may be used.
If Magic Loop is not preferred, 16” cable and double pointed needles may be used.

Suggested yarn: Peace Fleece “Worsted” (200 yds/113 g)

If colorblocking: Main color: approx. 90 yds (50 g) Heavy Worsted or Aran weight yarn; Cuff color: approx. 80 yds (45 g) Heavy Worsted or Aran weight yarn

If using only one color: Approx. 170 yds (95 g) Aran weight yarn

If substituting yarn, look for similar yardage per weight specifications as the suggested yarn. Also consider matching the fiber content, texture and handfeel of the suggested yarn. Always knit a swatch to ensure gauge matches the pattern.
